When it comes to learning hula hoop moves, mastering a few easy hula hoop tricks can be transformative for your hooping journey. While they may seem like basic moves, they also serve as building blocks for smooth transitions and dynamic flow, enhancing your creative expression. As you perfect some of the foundational skills you will also gain the confidence to start linking moves together as you let loose and play.

A handful of well practised easy hula hoop tricks not only make your hooping appear more intentional and fluid, but also unlocks new possibilities. The more comfortable you become, the easier it is to experiment, improvise, and discover your own unique hoop style.

Here are 3 easy hula hoop tricks for you to master to help open the doors to endless future hooping opportunities.

Lasso

This one-handed overhead spin is one of the easiest tricks to master, and it looks amazing! With a palm up, basic grip, swing your arm back and scoop forward in a circular motion as you raise your arm upwards and release the hoop so it spins in a horizontal circle above your head. Yep that’s right – like you’re twirling a lasso. Keep your bicep beside your ear and push your hand forward and back with your fingers pointing to the sky. Try to keep the hoop spinning around your 4 extended fingers, across your palm, so that the hoop sits in that sweet L-shaped thumb groove.

This trick is perfect for transitions, adding some variety to your flow, and it fits in beautifully with some hoop-dance styling. Make sure to practise with both hands!

Horizontal Iso Slide

Want something that looks mind-blowing, but is surprisingly simple? Meet the horizontal iso slide, or horizontal cat eye. This is an illusion based isolation move that makes it look like your hoop is gliding sideways through the air, as though across an invisible flat surface while staying in the vertical plane. This is a great little introduction to isolations and adds a touch of smooth controlled magic to your hoopertoire.

Again, aim to practise this with both hands and directions, but be warned – once you get it, it’s super addictive.

Iso Folds

These funky, foldy tricks look technical but are totally beginner friendly. Get ready to fold your hoop in and out of space, as you create angular, accordion-style illusions. Iso folds are great for breaking up circular movement while giving your flow some geometric flair!

These moves are also great for building muscle memory and co-ordination.

When it comes to learning new hula hoop tricks, it’s a good idea to go slow, film yourself, and celebrate your wins. Check out the videos in this post for break downs of the moves, and pause them as you need. Take your time to feel out the moves and get comfortable with them. Filming yourself can be really beneficial too. As you watch the footage back, pay attention to your form or the placement of your hands. This can really help you identify what you may need to alter to really nail the tricks.
